Punjab government : Sale of flavored tobacco and e-cigarettes from Thursday was banned
Sale of flavored tobacco and e-cigarettes was banned from Thursday as per a notification issued to that effect by the Punjab government.
Reviewing the implementation measures for control of tobacco, the Punjab Health Secretary, Hussan Lal stated that this notification was necessary to bring the many firms selling flavored and scented tobacco under the purview of the Tobacco Control Act. He further clarified that the e-commerce companies selling e-cigarettes were also liable to be booked under the Act.
Lal solicited support from all Deputy Commissioners, NGOs and the various police authorities in helping to enforce compliance of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act and ban on smoking. He was more concerned about its strict adherence in and around educational institutions. He directed the Education Department officials too, to put into force, strict compliance of this ban within a distance of 200 meters from any educational institution. Non-compliance would be dealt with seriously.
Sale of cigarettes in loose form had to be especially banned as that would deter teenagers from forming a habit of smoking. Considering the harmful effects of tobacco, Lal was gravely concerned about the rising addiction to tobacco and tobacco products in Punjab. About 12% of the population consumed tobacco and Lal wanted to make Punjab a smoke-free state within the next three months.
